How to Use the Grade Calculator

Our free grade calculator helps you compute your current course grade and determine what score you need on your final exam. Add your assignments with their grade (%) and weight (%). The total weight should equal 100% for an accurate calculation. Optionally enter a target grade to see what you need on the final.

Example Calculations

  • Homework (20% weight) at 85%, Midterm (30% weight) at 78%, Final Exam (50% weight) at 90%: Current grade = (85×0.20) + (78×0.30) + (90×0.50) = 85.4% (B).
  • Target grade of 90% (A-) with a final worth 40%: You need (90 - 60) / 0.40 = 75% on the final, assuming your current average without the final is 60%.
  • Three quizzes worth 10% each at 92%, 88%, and 95%, plus a project worth 70% at 85%: Overall = (92×0.10 + 88×0.10 + 95×0.10 + 85×0.70) = 87.0% (B+).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my grade?
Enter each assignment with its grade percentage and weight. The calculator multiplies each grade by its weight, sums them, and divides by total weight to get your overall grade. For example, if you scored 90% on a test worth 50% of your grade, that contributes 45 points toward your total.

What grade do I need on my final exam?
Enter your target grade and the weight of your final exam. The calculator shows exactly what percentage you need on the final to reach your goal. For instance, if your current grade is 82% and the final is worth 30%, you'd need a 70% on the final to maintain an 80% average.

What is a weighted grade?
A weighted grade gives different importance (weights) to different assignments. For example, a final exam worth 30% affects your grade more than a quiz worth 10%. The weight reflects how much each assignment contributes to your overall course grade.

How do I calculate my GPA?
GPA is calculated by converting letter grades to grade points (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.) and averaging them based on credit hours. Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum them, and divide by total credit hours attempted.

What is a weighted grade system?
A weighted grade system assigns different importance (weights) to different assignments. For example, a final exam worth 50% affects your grade more than homework worth 10%. Most high schools and colleges use weighted grading systems.
